7/10:
Today, the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office announced that the suspect in the June 23rd stabbing on Indian Hill Trail has been indicted on multiple charges, including Attempted Murder and a Hate Crime.
This was a shocking and isolated act of violence, committed by someone from outside our community. The victim, a Perinton resident, was seriously injured in this attack, and my thoughts remain with him and his loved ones as he continues to recover. Let me be clear: hate and violence have no place in our community.
I want to thank the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office for their professional response and thorough investigation. I also want to personally recognize John Overacker, our Director of Safety & Security, whose vigilance played a critical role in helping deputies quickly locate and apprehend the suspect. While on patrol, John spotted the suspect and immediately relayed the location to law enforcement, allowing the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office to take swift action and make an arrest.
We created the Safety & Security Department in 2021 as part of a long-term strategy to ensure that our parks, trails, facilities, and public spaces remain safe and welcoming for all. Under John’s leadership, the department now provides 24/7 coverage of Town-owned properties. Since launching evening patrols, the team has visited the Indian Hill Trailhead more than 175 times, helping to monitor one of our most popular trail access points.
We will continue to invest in the safety of our residents and work every day to ensure that everyone feels safe – on our trails, in our neighborhoods, and throughout the Town of Perinton.
