Located in Perinton Park, the Project also Includes New ADA Sidewalks, Expanded Parking Lot, and Additional Amenities.
The Town of Perinton today celebrated the grand opening of the Perinton Skatepark and enhancements to Perinton Park with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Town Supervisor Ciaran Hanna, the Perinton Town Board, and town officials, were joined by Assemblymember Jen Lunsford, and community members to celebrate the event.
“I’m thrilled for kids, families, and adults to begin enjoying this new community resource in the Town of Perinton. The Perinton Skatepark and Perinton Park improvements reflect our commitment to creating a space where families and individuals can come together, stay active, and foster a strong sense of community,” said Town Supervisor Ciaran Hanna. “This project is a shining example of what can be achieved when our community unites with a shared vision. I want to thank the skatepark advocates, our hardworking staff and partners for making this project happen.”
The $2.7 million project includes a wide range of amenities such as a shade structure, main skate plaza, lighting, benches and picnic tables. The new skatepark, located in a previously underutilized area of Perinton Park, spans 13,500 square feet and includes a unique pump track alongside quarter pipes, grind rails, and a bowl section. The inclusive design ensures both beginners and advanced skaters can safely enjoy the park.
First announced in August 2022, the project included extensive community input through public surveys and meetings. Construction began in July 2023 and encompassed several enhancements to Perinton Park. These improvements include an enhanced pedestrian entrance from Route 31F, ADA-compliant sidewalks, improved lighting, landscaping to enhance the park’s accessibility and convenience, and an expanded parking lot. Rochester Earth, Inc. served as the lead contractor for the project, while Spohn Ranch provided design consulting services.
Recreation and Parks Commissioner Jeff Nutting said, “This skatepark is a testament to our commitment of providing safe, inclusive, and engaging recreational spaces. We’re thrilled about the positive impact it’s poised to have on our community. This innovative project not only promotes active lifestyles but also offers a dedicated space for skating activities, enriching recreational opportunities for both residents and visitors alike.”
The Town secured $1.5 million in grant funding from Assemblymember Jen Lunsford for the skatepark. Additional funding came from ARPA funds and town tax dollars.
Assemblymember Jen Lunsford said, “This skatepark will be an invaluable asset to our community, providing a safe space for skaters, skateboarders and bikers to practice and play. I was thrilled to be able to secure $1.5 million in state grant funding to build this park and provide essential amenities to make the park safe and welcoming to neighbors and visitors.”
Local businesses and organizations have also shown their support for the skatepark by contributing to its funding and development. The Fairport Foundation, in collaboration with local skatepark advocates, spearheaded fundraising efforts for additional park amenities. Various community members and businesses provided sponsorships, headlined by ESL Federal Credit Union, Fairport Perinton Merchant’s Association, and McCarthy Events.
Greg Pilato, a Perinton resident and active member of the Fairport Skatepark Campaign, stated, “This project has truly been a labor of love for many in our community. I am proud of our collective grassroots efforts to bring this vision to life and grateful to the Town of Perinton and our multiple supporters, for making our dream a reality. The new skatepark will serve as a vibrant hub of activity and a source of pride for Perinton.”
The Perinton Skatepark is located within Perinton Park at 99 O’Connor Road, Fairport, NY 14450. The 43.6-acre park provides direct access to the Erie Canal and the Canalway Trail, making it easily accessible to pedestrians from the Village of Fairport. Operation of the skatepark will be managed by the Town of Perinton Department of Recreation & Parks. It will be open year-round, with the same daily hours of operation as Perinton Park, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
