1/9/24: High Wind Warning

January 9, 2024

A High Wind Warning, issued by the National Weather Service, is in effect across the region until 4 AM Wednesday. Expect southeast winds ranging from 30 to 40 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 60 mph. Typically, our gustiest winds in WNY come from the northwest, west, or south. This deviation in wind direction could pose an increased risk of damage due to tree roots favoring westerly winds.

As always, our dedicated DPW is fully staffed and ready for this event. For assistance, contact them at (585) 223-5115, and for after-hours emergencies, reach out to (585) 425-7380.

Damaging winds may down trees and power lines, leading to widespread power outages. Please consider these important tips:

✅ If your power goes out, contact your provider first. If you have RG&E, call 1-800- 743-1701. If you have Fairport Electric, call (585) 223-9500.

✅ Track and report RG&E outages by going to rge.com.

✅ Only call 911 if the power outage has caused a life-threatening event.

✅ In case of downed power lines, call 911 – do not try to free lines or remove debris yourself.

✅ If traffic lights are out, treat the intersection as a 4-way stop.

✅ If using a generator, be sure to operate it outdoors and have it ventilated safely outdoors to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

✅ Check on elderly friends, family, and neighbors.

✅ Have emergency supplies ready: food, water, flashlights, firewood, and medication.

✅ If you rely on electricity to operate medical equipment, make alternative arrangements.

✅ Do not leave candles unattended.

✅ Bring pets inside.

✅ Secure garbage totes, patio furniture, and outdoor items.
